Worship Arts

God is the most creative being who was, and is,
and is to come. In His image, He created us
to be creative. The Worship Arts Ministry at
Fourth Church exists to express the message
of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through artistic mediums. Through these expressions,
it is our mission
to inspire people to draw closer to God
in order to experience God’s promise
to draw closer to us.
(James 4 : 8).

David was one of the greatest worship leaders in history because he was a man after God’s own heart. He knew many things about worship:

1. David knew the transforming power of worship...

2. David knew that worship must cost something...

3. David knew that worship is physical and passionate...

4. David knew that worship was between him and God...

5. David knew that worship is a witness to the unsaved...

1. David knew the transforming power of worship

In Psalm 115:8 we read about the worship of idols... “They have mouths, but they cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; They have ears, but they cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; they have hands, but they cannot feel, feet but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make (or worship) them will become like them.

God calls us to a life-style of worship for many reasons, but central among these is that we become like the person or thing we worship.

“And we, with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory,
and are being transformed into His likeness with
ever-increasing glory.” (II Corinthians 3:18)

2. David knew that worship must cost us something
When David went to build an altar to the Lord for the purpose of worship, a wealthy man, Araunah, offered to give his King (David) anything he needed; oxen, threshing sledges, wood... David’s reply was simple:

“No, I insist on paying for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God
burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” (II Samuel 24:24)

3. David knew that worship is physical and passionate
After David and his army defeated the Philistines (again), they worshiped with all their might. II Samuel, chapter 6 is a picture of a fantastic worship service. Verse 14 tells us:

“David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord
with all his might.”
Later in Psalm 63:1 David writes:
“My soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee,
in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

4. David knew that worship was between him and God
So often during our corporate worship setting, we can become distracted by so many things. We look around at other people, we focus on sounds we don’t like, we even despise songs we don’t know. Listen to what happens to David’s wife later in II Samuel 6:16:

“As the ark of the Lord was entering the city of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.”

Later, Michal confronted David about his behavior, and she was concerned about his undignified and humiliating actions. This was David’s reply in verse 22:
“I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes...”

God was not pleased that Michal criticized David’s worship of Him and punished her as we read in verse 23:

“And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.”

5. David knew that worship is a witness to the unsaved
When the unbelieving world sees our worship as a fresh, authentic, and passionate expression of our love for Jesus, they will come face to face with who God is. Psalm 40:3 reads:

“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
many will see and fear, and will trust in the Lord.”
