Next YAH Luncheon
Thursday, March 4, at Noon
Our programs vary from missionary speakers to gospel quartets and beyond. For example at Octoberfest, our October 2009 luncheon, we heard from Director, Tim Mason of Riverview Bible Camp in Cusick, Washington. Other programs we have had were Riversong signing group from Riverview Retirement Center; Mike Klontz with New Tribes Mission; Christmas music program led by Fourth's own "Scrap Iron Quartet"; the Project Joy Senior Serenaders; Patriotic Songfest by Doug and Candy Gintz along with special speaker, Joel Craig, father of soldier, Sargent James Craig who died in battle in Iraq.
Young at Heart also supports Junior Camp at Riverview Bible Camp as one of it's primary ministries. Each month we take a "Noisey Offering" by dumping coins into a metal coffee can. This past summer we were able to provide scholarships for 22 juniors that otherwise might not have been able to attend camp. Many of those were kids from the immediate Logan neighborhood. And many of the children attending camp accepted Christ as their personal savior. It is a most worthwhile endeavor.
Young At Heart/Seniors Ministry
Year End Annual Ministry Report 2009
Submitted by Bob Franzen
Young At Heart Director
Young At Heart is a euphemism for the name of the senior citizen group of Fourth Memorial Church. But more than that, it expresses the state of mind and actions of that age group. It also shows the connection between us grandmas and grandpas to the children and youth of Fourth Church. We support the childrens and youth camp programs financially and through volunteering to help with those ministries. Many of our members are actively involved in the large Awana program of Fourth Church. Some of us are charged with security during Awana events while others of our group are workers and leaders of the various Awana groups. Young At Heart participants are engaged in many of the adult ministries as well and our monthly programs reflect that interest.
During the year the programs included four musical groups; The Melody Singers in March, Project Joy in May, Doug and Candy Gintz and their Fourth of July patriotic program and The Scrap Iron Quartet at Christmas time.
In February the Riverview Bible Camp staff prepared lunch for the group and Tim Mason, director of the camp, gave us an update on camp activities. Tim also spoke at our October meeting.
Our new pastor, Neil, and his wife, Carol, told of their past ministries and of growing up at Fourth Church “way back when”. Neil also shared the stage with the Scrap Iron Quartet in December.
In June John Anderson spoke and Steve and April Hauschild gave a rundown on the Awana Program.
Our good friends at the Union Gospel Mission were ably represented by Laurie Willson who told of the mission’s activities of late. The UGM garners support from many of our seniors. In turn, the mission lends support to Fourth’s Wednesday night activities.
Daniel Ward, Associate Dean of Students for Moody Bible Institute in Spokane, filled us in on the progress of Moody in recent years. We’re blessed having Moody on our premises as many of the students volunteer at the church in different ministries.
Mike and Gwen Klontz, missionaries with New Tribes Mission, told of their work overseas at our November meeting.
So you can see our interests range far and wide. Any senior age 60 and over should be able to find an area of interest from among those available. We meet once a month on the first Thursday of the month. The luncheons begin at noon and the programs run from one to two so you can get home with plenty of the day left to enjoy.
The Young At Heart Executive Board is made up of:
- Pastor Ed and Elaine Underhill comb the hills for people to put on the programs.
- Laura Schlangen handles publicity and puts the information in the church bulletin.
- Sally Sharpe is the head chef and meal planner.
- Richard and Charlene Gardner - Richard has a knack of doing anything that presents itself to be done. He recently took on the huge job of collecting the old newspapers and aluminum cans the members bring to the meetings and selling them to the recycler. Charlene is Sally’s head assistant and really cooks up a storm every month.
- Elise Widman handles everything financial.
- Bob Franzen keeps peace among the board members at our once a month board meetings.
- Bill and Georgialee Smithpeters are faithful workers at the luncheons. Georgialee oversees the calling committee that calls each member every month to remind people of upcoming meetings. Bill is in charge of the setup team which puts up tables and chairs and other necessities each and every month.
- In addition, many YAH’ers, too many to list, donate their time and effort each month. Thank you!
All you seniors are invited to attend our Young At Heart gathering on the first Thursday of every month. We meet in the lower level of the church under the Worship Center. It’s a good way to meet people as we have well over one hundred people attending every month. I think you’ll enjoy it.
